From February 4-6, 2020 there was the 5th Symposium of the Virtual Alpine Observatory (VAO) at the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry of the University of Bern, Switzerland.

This event was supported through the BEKB Förderfonds.

In about 50 lectures and presentations scientific and technological progress was presented to approximately 85 participants.

The symposium was opened by Prof. Markus Leuenberger, Director of the International Foundation High Altitude Research Stations Jungfraujoch and Gornergrat (HFSJG). Greetings were given by Prof. Christian Leumann, Rector University of Bern, Dr. Christian Barth, Director General of the Bavarian Ministry of the Environment and Consumer Protection, Mr. Christoph Neuhaus, State Councillor of the Canton of Bern, Dr. Paul Steffen, Vice Director of the Federal Office for the Environment (FOEN) and Prof. Michael Bittner, VAO Coordinator and Chair of the VAO Board. A video welcome note by André Jol, Head of the Adaptation and LULUCF Division, European Environment Agency, was also presented.

The VAO is a network of European high altitude research stations in the Alps and similar mountain regions. Observatories of eight countries are represented in the network.
