On August 20, 1898, the Gornergrat Railway, Switzerland’s first electric rack railway, travelled up the Gornergrat ( 3089 m.a.s.l.) for the first time. From this day on, this pioneering work of railway engineering enabled guests from near and far to discover the mountain and glacier world above Zermatt.
