Installation of steel beams

New steel beams had to be installed at the research station at Jungfraujoch to support the roof/rock. The old steel beams remain installed, but after almost a hundred years they are a little rusty… so for safety reasons more steel beams were installed. This was no easy task! The beams were flown by helicopter to the terrace on the 5th floor and then brought by hand and with the help of rolling jacks through the room of the custodians and the small emergency exit door into the space between the house and the rock (a steel beam weighs approx. 100-130 kg). The beams were then positioned and installed in the right places using chain hoists. Many thanks to the company Seiler AG, Bönigen! Photos: HFSJG and Seiler AG
