Down Under at the Top of Europe: ASAIN Visit to the Jungfraujoch

On the 10th of December, we were excited to welcome a diverse group of Australian scientists and professionals from the Australian-Swiss Academic and Innovation Network (link to https://asain.ch/) to the Jungfraujoch research station. ASAIN promotes collaboration between Switzerland and Australia in science, research, and innovation by connecting a diverse community, hosting events, sharing funding opportunities, supporting mentoring, and enabling mobility between the two countries.

HFSJG has numerous linkages to Australia, in particular through close collaboration with the Kennaook/Cape Grim research station (link to https://research.csiro.au/acc/capabilities/cape-grim-baseline-air-pollution-station/). Jungfraujoch and Kennaook/Cape Grim research stations are two of the longest operating and best-known remote research stations in the world. Research infrastructures like these facilitate international collaborations through the sharing of resources, leading to scientific advancement that plays a vital role in resolving the major challenges facing societies today, such as climate and environmental change. We were very glad to welcome the ASAIN group to the Jungfraujoch and hope we will have many further connections with our partners down under in future!

The ASAIN group picked a day with excellent weather for their visit, and they enjoyed all the highlights of the Jungfraujoch, from views across the glaciers, to feeding the Alpine Choughs, and of course learning about all the scientific activities going on at the research station. Custodians Thomas and Sonja, as well as the Australian director of the HFSJG, Eliza Harris, and Australian research scientist Rob Modini (PSI) enjoyed showing this group around the labs. The ASAIN group were kind enough to thank us with jars of vegemite, bringing the taste of Australia to the top of Europe.
